The D hole 12 is regarded by players as the work horse of the range. The shorter neck makes the instrument easier to play, especially if playing rhythm, but the guitar also has a strong presence for soloing. The sound is not as focused as an oval hole guitar but that makes it more suited to play other kinds of music, as well as gypsy jazz of course (In fact, the Selmer-Maccaferri guitar and later the Selmer guitar were not designed for gypsy jazz at all. In their time they were used by many artists who were playing lots of different styles of music on them. It is, of course, Django that defined the sound and the style revered by players all around the world today but I believe that the Selmer style guitars can be used for more than gypsy jazz music.)
The guitar shown on this page is an example of possible customization. Each aspect of the guitar, from the choice of wood to the type of bindings and the colour of the finish, have been selected by the customer. The soundboard is made of cedar and the back, sides and neck of figured maple. The finishing is amber sunburst and the maple binding has been left in its natural colour.
